Suspect killed by officers during shooting investigation in Izard Co.

IZARD COUNTY, AR (KAIT) – A man accused of shooting his wife over the weekend was killed by officers during an investigation into the incident.

According to the Izard County Sheriff's Department, deputies on Saturday around 6 p.m. were called to 2626 Tanner Holler Road in response to a shooting. When deputies arrived, they say they found Sandra Grady Lawrence near the house with a gunshot wound to the knee. She told officers her husband, Dennis Lawrence, shot her.

Sandra Lawrence was later taken to a hospital in Little Rock to receive treatment. Sheriff Tate Lawrence stated in a news release he believes her injury is not life threatening.

Officers searched the home and nearby structures for Dennis Lawrence. He was eventually found by a dog team about two miles away from the home armed with a high powered rifle, according to the sheriff's department.

Sheriff Tate Lawrence says Dennis Lawrence was killed after an encounter with law enforcement.

An investigation into the case is ongoing.

The Arkansas Department of Correction North Central Unit and Arkansas State Police aided in the investigation.
