NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

Nashville leaders have a better idea about Mayor Karl Dean's spending priorities for the new fiscal year after hearing his budget proposal Tuesday.

The mayor's budget this year has no tax increase, and there is more money going to police, parks, transportation and libraries.

Among the big areas people are watching includes money for Metro Nashville Public Schools. While MNPS will get an increase in funding, it is not as much as school leaders had wanted.

Dean is proposing giving schools $26 million more than last year, however, the school board said it needs $44 million more.

"Some people will say the increase this year is not enough. Some will say that it's too much. I say that education is the most important thing the city does, and we should put every resource we reasonably can into giving our kids the best education possible. Now, that doesn't mean they have an open checkbook," Dean said.

The mayor's budget includes no subsidies for the Nashville Farmers' Market, which has been struggling to stay afloat, nor for Municipal Auditorium or the Tennessee State Fairgrounds.

The proposal also takes $5 million out of the budget from General Hospital.

None of this is finalized, and budget hearings on the proposed budget begin in mid-May.
