Nashville child recovering after losing foot to train strike

NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

A Nashville boy is still recovering in the hospital after he was nearly killed by a train Sunday when his foot got stuck while walking on the tracks.

Police say 11-year-old Kevon Mayberry was hit around 8 p.m. Sunday while walking down the train tracks with three friends at 16th Avenue North.

The child said he saw a train coming but thought he had enough time to cross the tracks. While crossing the tracks, his foot got stuck and the train struck his ankle.

He was transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center, where his foot was amputated.

The boy's family said more than 50 people have visited Kevon in the hospital, including friends, classmates and football teammates. It's difficult to cope with losing a foot at age 11, but is stepdad says he is in much better spirits now.

On April 30, police said a 13-year-old boy was critically hurt after being struck by a freight train near Spence Lane and Lebanon Pike.
