ASU Track's Chavez and Nicasio compete in Saluki Outdoor Open

From Arkansas State University

With aspirations of securing NCAA outdoor track and field qualifying marks with greater distance marks, Arkansas State University's Richard Chavez and Chris Nicasio participated in the throwing events at this Saturday's (May 4) 2013 Saluki Outdoor Open in Carbondale, Ill.

The meet, which was held at the University of Southern Illinois' Lew Hartzog Track and Field Complex, featured athletes from Bethel (Tenn.), Missouri-Kansas City, and Rend Lake along with Arkansas State and host Southern Illinois.

"We had performances which were mostly useful," said ASU assistant coach Matt Kraft.  "Richie (Chavez) had a season best in discus and Chris (Nicasio) would have qualified for regionals with his warmup throw, but didn't in competition.  Richie (Chavez) had his second farthest hammer throw ever so we should set up well for conference meet next weekend."

Richard Chavez, coming off a first-place effort in the discus throw at last Saturday's (April 27) ASU Red Wolves Open, achieved a 2013 outdoor season best 167-08.20/51.11m in the discus to claim second place.  The junior thrower's distance eclipsed his previous best mark of 167-00.32/50.91m at the ASU Red Wolves Open.  In the shot put, Chavez also finished insecond place with a 56-11.07/17.35m toss to post the 68th-best effort among this season's NCAA West Qualifiers.  The Red Wolves' lone participant in the meet's hammer throw event, Chavez produced a third-place and season personal second-best 188-07.39/57.49m mark.

Chris Nicasio would capture third-place honors among the 12 competitors in the discus with a throw of 165-08.18/50.50m, his third-best outing of this spring.  The A-State junior also competed in the shot put where he placed eighth as a result of earning a 49-11.21/15.22 mark.

The Arkansas State men's team currently sits at 10th place in the latest (April 30) NCAA Division I South Central Region rankings, which are administered by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).

Both the A-State men's and women's team will compete in the 2013 Sun Belt Conference (SBC) Outdoor Track and Field Championships next weekend, May 10-12, at theAnsin Sports Complex in Miramar, Fla.
