GILBERT, AZ (CBS5) -

A Gilbert woman was sentenced to 18 months in prison for faking cancer and fraudulently collecting donations.

Judge John Ditsworth gave Kelly Ann Wasko, 42, the prison sentence for theft, three years' probation for attempted theft and seven years probation for fraudulent schemes in connection with a scam Wasko began in December 2011.

Ditsworth ordered the probation sentences to be served concurrently.

Wasko originally pleaded innocent, but change her plea in April as part of a plea agreement.

Wasko told her daughter living in Colorado that she needed a bone marrow transplant to treat Hodgkin's lymphoma and that her insurance would not cover the cost, so her daughter created a Facebook fundraising page, through which more than $12,000 was collected. Wasko also defrauded another victim out of $8,000.

Her daughter said she donated $1,000 of her own but didn't think her mother's claim was adding up, became suspicious and contacted Colorado authorities, who alerted Gilbert police.
