Neighbors near Sevier Park say homes constantly flood

NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

Homeowners in a popular Nashville neighborhood say they are plagued with problems every time it rains.

They say the city needs to do something to stop flooding in the 12 South area, but so far, that hasn't happened.

Josh Jarrett recorded video of his flooded home during the heavy downpours on April 27, and he said the damage cost him all of his hardwood floors.

"We can't replace hardwood floors multiple times a year. We've got to do something," Jarrett said.

Residents near Sevier Park in 12 South get pounded every time it rains.

"I lost my driveway twice," said resident Lucie Becus. "I feel like it's happening more frequently, and even though I'm taking measures to protect myself, I feel like I'm limited in what I can do other than build a concrete wall around my house."

The problem appears to originate at Sevier Park, where an ancient drain simply can't handle all the water that now comes its way.

"Save the water, save the houses, stop the flooding," said resident Sybil Spaulding.

A new retainer pond might solve the issue by giving the water a new place to drain it. Either way, it is clear people in the neighborhood need help.

"Two or three days' rain, we're in trouble over and over again," said resident Eric Batts.

A representative for Metro Water Services said the department wants to help the people, but there is no easy solution.

The city said it is likely not going to turn the park drain into a retention pond, and to fully solve the issue, crews will need to get in people's backyards and widen the creek.
