12 sets of twins at DeRidder elementary school

DERIDDER, LA (KPLC) -

There is an interesting group of students walking the halls of K.R. Hanchey Elementary in DeRidder this year.

The school has students in pre-k, kindergarten and first grade, and with only three different age groups, teachers were shocked to find out the school has 12 sets of twins.

"Of course, every year we have sets of twins, but when we started counting and when I got to five, I was amazed. But then we got to 10 and I was shocked," said Principal Elizabeth Maricle.

Maricle believes this is the first time in school history that this many twins have attended.

Maricle said the school year began with 14 sets, but two have recently moved.

"We decided to dedicate a special page in the yearbook to the twins this year," Maricle said.

Hannah and Clark Bell's parents thought their children may be the only set of twins at their school.

"We were expecting maybe one or two other sets, but wow, I didn't realize there were that many," DeAnna Bell said. "When we got the yearbook, we were so surprised."

While some of the twins are in separate classes, they walk through the halls hand-in-hand.

"If I see my sister, I say 'hey' and give her a hug," Tequia Martin said.

"I think it will be interesting to see if they all stick around and graduate together," Maricle said. "That would be really neat."

In April, Williams Baptist cross country runner Alex Van Herpen competed in the prestigious Boston Marathon. An incredible feat. Learning about his path to get there, it stopped me in my tracks. Five years ago Alex was bound to a wheelchair. in January of 2011, he was diagnosed with strep throat, the flu and mono all within a two week period. For five months Alex was bound to a wheel chair. One day he just got up and walked. Medical experts had no explanation for any of it.  ...
