Newport PD investigating burglaries at auto businesses

NEWPORT, AR (KAIT) – The Newport Police Department is investigating a rash of early morning burglaries that happened Tuesday.

According to Lt. Patrick Weatherford, officers were initially called to Arkansas Highway 367 North around 3:00 in the morning for two suspicious vehicles. While investigating the area, officers found a burglary in progress at Affordable Wheels, a car dealership at 1004 Highway 367 North.

Officers say two men were attempting to load a large safe into a vehicle belonging to the dealership. The suspects ran away into a neighborhood near the business and avoided being arrested.

Police also discovered other burglaries had taken place at Safe-T Brake and Carlon James Motor Company, both on the 900 block of Highway 367 North while investigating.

Several hours later, Weatherford states, an attempted burglary was reported at Kroger after someone found a back door had been damaged.

No arrests have been made by police and the investigation is ongoing. No description of the suspects was released by police.
