Newport PD investigating burglaries at auto businesses

NEWPORT, AR (KAIT) –The Newport Police Department is investigating a rash of early morning burglaries that happened Tuesday.

According to Lt.Patrick Weatherford, officers were initially called to Arkansas Highway 367North around 3:00 in the morning for two suspicious vehicles. Whileinvestigating the area, officers found a burglary in progress at AffordableWheels, a car dealership at 1004 Highway 367 North.

Officers say twomen were attempting to load a large safe into a vehicle belonging to thedealership. The suspects ran away into a neighborhood near the business andavoided being arrested.

Police also discoveredother burglaries had taken place at Safe-T Brake and Carlon James Motor Company,both on the 900 block of Highway 367 North while investigating.

Several hourslater, Weatherford states, an attempted burglary was reported at Kroger aftersomeone found a back door had been damaged.

No arrests havebeen made by police and the investigation is ongoing. No description of the suspectswas released by police.
