JONESBORO, AR - A downtown Jonesboro restaurant has been denied a private club liquor permit.

Julio Diaz, Jr. wants the permit for his Mexican restaurant and sports bar that he plans to open on Main Street.  The Alcoholic Beverage Control Division formally denied the permit request yesterday in what basically amounted to a matter of routine procedure on most initial applications, something Diaz said he fully understands and expected.  "Well, I think it's just an old procedure that the system has to go through for the liquor license.  My lawyer called on our appeal or I believe we'll have our hearing on the 22nd of September," said Diaz.

The ABC routinely denies applications for a permit when there is any opposition, as there was in this case from the Craighead County Sheriff and the Jonesboro Police Chief.
