Jonesboro -- Heather Flanigan Reports

You Drink & Drive. You Lose

August 27, 2004 -- Posted at 3:45 p.m. CDT

JONESBORO -- The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that about three in every ten Americans will be involved in an alcohol-related crash at some time in their lives.  And the Labor Day holiday falls third only to Superbowl Sunday and New Year's Day for the holiday with the highest alcohol related traffic fatalities.  But a nationwide campaign is trying to reduce those deaths.

Last year, alcohol was involved in 40% of all traffic fatalities.  The NHTSA estimates more than a quarter million people were injured in crashes where alcohol was present, and of those people, that means approximately every two minutes, one person was injured.

And that's a number local law enforcement wants to see decrease, with the help of a national campaign.

Jonesboro Police Department Captain Kelly Baggett said, "Hopefully we are making a difference in the actual number of crashes. Statistics show hopefully that they are going down. So I think it's been a success in the years past."

The 'You Drink & Drive. You Lose' campaign starts Friday and runs until September 12th. And that means police are hunting drunk drivers.

"We'll have some sobriety checkpoints in some different places and we'll just do everything we can to try to make a difference," said Arkansas State Police Captain Mike Coy.

But the end of summer means, for some, one last party.

"People are taking their last minute vacations, last few days to the lake, or so forth. Traditionally a lot of people are outside and outside activities, and alcohol consumption seems to be a little greater," said Coy.

And for those who are ticketed...some big problems.

"They face a suspended drivers license, some pretty stiff fines, a court appearance, some public service work and generally some embarrassment," said Baggett.

But Captain Coy says you can avoid all that by thinking ahead.

"Make arraignments for someone to take them home or drive them, so they won't be in a position that they feel like they need to drive," said Coy.

The legal alcohol limit for adults over 21 is .08 percent. Anyone younger than 21 can receive a DUI if their blood alcohol content is between .02 and .08 percent.
