JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) - The Food Bank of Northeast Arkansas was awarded a $500 grant from the Arkansas Community Foundation on Monday.

This money will be used in the Cross County area as a part of their Core Food Distribution Program.

Vicki Pillow with the Food Bank says they distributed 4 million pounds of food to families at risk of hunger in 2013.

This is a 1 million pound increase of food when compared to 2012.

"People are just having a hard time making ends meet.  We have families in our service area who are making tough choice between foods and putting gas in the car to go to work, food or going to the doctor, food or paying their utilities.  They're making some really tough choices so right now times are just tough", Pillow says.

She always said for every 1 dollar donated to the food bank they can feed 5 families.
