Arkansas Republicans Gearing Up for National Convention

AUGUST 29, 2004 - Posted at 7:28 a.m. CDT

LITTLE ROCK, AR - Arkansas' Republican delegates who identify with the religous right don't expect to hear a lot of people voicing their views at the GOP convention this week.  But that's okay with most of them, they understand that the party has to reach out to moderate voters as well.

A survey conducted by The Associated Press found that a quarter of the 36 Republican delegates from Arkansas identified themselves as part of the conservative Christian movement.  That's close to the figure of 22 percent among all 2,008 Republican delegates.

But evangelicals are not receiving prime-time speaking slots at the convention.  Political scientists say its an effort to strengthen President Bush's support among more moderate wings of the party.

Congressman John Boozman, one of the nine Arkansas delegates who said he was a member of the religous right, looks at it from a slightly different angle.  He said it's a good strategy for the party to showcase some of the moderates, to show that it's very inclusive and takes in many different opinions.
