Lafayette, La. (AStateRedWolves.com) – Arkansas State senior Daniel Wright has been named to the 2013 First-Team All-Sun Belt Conference Baseball Team, the league announced Tuesday at its annual family night before the start of the SBC Baseball Tournament.
Wright was named to the honor after a stellar senior season for the Red Wolves. Wright enters this week's tournament with 93 strikeouts, which is second most in the conference, a 3.17 ERA, the fourth best mark in the conference and has held opposing batters to a .222 batting average on the year, the second lowest average among all conference teams.
The senior from Bartlett, Tenn., has been spectacular all season and comes into the tournament have gone at least seven innings in his previous eight starts. He has thrown back-to-back nine innings and recently picked up his second complete-game victory of the year in a win over UALR. In his last 18 innings, Wright has retired the side in order in nine of them.
He earned Sun Belt Conference Pitcher of the Week honors on April 8 after picking up a save and a win in the previous week. Wright picked up his first save since 2011 when he recorded the final three outs in a home game against Southeast Missouri and then went out just three days later and tossed the first complete-game shutout of his career in a 6-0 victory over Western Kentucky. He struck out a career-high batters, yielded just five hits and did not allow a runner past second base during the game. Wright also retired 12 straight in the game at one point.
A-State will begin play in the Sun Belt Conference Tournament on Wednesday against top-seeded Troy. The game is set to begin at 12:30 p.m. and will be broadcast on 95.3 The Ticket and in the StateZone on AStateRedWolves.com.
