The 2013 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field West Preliminary Championships will be held this week (May 23-25) for selected members of the Arkansas State University women's and men's track & field teams in Austin, Texas.
An A-State all-time high 11 athletes are scheduled to compete at the 2013 WestPreliminaries, which will be conducted at the University of Texas' Mike A. Myers Stadium. The three-day event begins this Thursday (May 23) as the field events start at 12 p.m. (CT) with the men's discus and the running events commencing at 4:30 p.m. (CT) with the women's 400-meter hurdles. The NCAA West Prelims will feature 48 competitors in each individual event as well as 24 relay squads, all vying for a national-qualifying spot in the top 12 in each event. The top 12 inboth the East and West regions will advance to the 2013 NCAA Division I Championships, which will take place from June 5-8 at the University of Oregon's Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore.
Representing the ASU women's team are seniors Stephanie Foreman (pole vault), Julia Agawu (discus), and Jamie Curry (triple jump) along with juniors Sharika Nelvis (100-meter hurdles and long jump) and Kristina Aubert (10,000-meter run). Seniors Solomon Williams (110-meter hurdles and triple jump) and Lucas Bateman (110-meter hurdles) will be joined on the men's team by juniors Joey Meyer (200-meter dash), Kashef Daniel (high jump), Chris Nicasio (hammer throw), and Richard Chavez (shot put).
The Red Wolves travel to Austin this week coming off second-place performances at the 2013 Sun Belt Conference (SBC) Outdoor Championships (May 10-12) in Miramar, Fla. Both the A-State women's and men's teams each tallied 131 team points in the conference championship meet.
