The opening day of competition at the 2013 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track West Preliminary Championships this Thursday (May 23) saw three Arkansas State University track and field athletes come up short in their quest to compete at nationals.

For the A-State women's team, juniors Sharika Nelvis and Kristina Aubert participated in the long jump and 10,000-meter run, respectively during first-day action at the NCAA West Prelims, which are being held at the University of Texas' Mike A. Myers Stadium.  On the men's side, junior Kashef Daniel made his NCAA regional meet debut in the high jump.

"Today didn't go as well as we had hoped but it wasn't totally unexpected either," said A-State head coach Jim Patchell.  "We had a couple of first timers with Kristina (Aubert) and Kashef (Daniel) and I think the experience will help them next year.  Sharika (Nelvis) was actually jumping well, but could not get on the board in the long jump. We only use her in the long jump for the conference meets but her strong event is the hurdles.

"The next two days set up better for us than today and I expect we will have a better showing both Friday and Saturday," added Patchell.

Nelvis, the 2013 Sun Belt Conference (SBC) Outdoor Championships' Most Outstanding Women's Track Performer and a 2013 first-team all-conference selection, placed 12th in preliminaries with a long jump performance of 18-08.50/5.70m in the fourth and final prelim flight.  Nelvis produced her best distance in the first of three attempts and would finish the preliminary round in a two-way tie for 37th place with Wichita State's Tanya Friesen.  The top 16 best marks after tiebreakers went on to qualify for finals and from there the top 12 performers will punch their ticket to the 2013 NCAA-I Championships to be held June 5-8 in Eugene, Ore.

Nelvis has another an opportunity to make a return appearance to nationals as the 2012 United States Track and Field/Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Second-Team All-America honoree will compete in the 100-meter hurdles in this Friday's (May 24) initial running event of day two.

In the women's 10,000-meter run, Kristina Aubert ran a 36.52.35 time to earn 31st place as the event's runners with the 12 best times from the lone heat in the opening day's final women's event advance to the national meet.

Kashef Daniel wrapped up his 2013 outdoor season by finishing in a six-way tie for 36th place overall in the men's high jump preliminaries as a result of clearing the bar at 6-07.50/2.02m to tie two others for 19th place in the prelim's second flight.

Besides Nelvis, those Red Wolves participating in Friday's events are senior Julia Agawu (discus) and senior Stephanie Foreman (pole vault) for the women.  The A-State men's squad will have seniors Solomon Williams (110-meter hurdles) and Lucas Bateman (110-meter hurdles) along with junior Chris Nicasio (hammer throw), Richard Chavez (shot put), and Joey Meyer (200-meter dash).  Williams was recognized as the 2013 SBC Outdoor Championships'Most Outstanding Field Events Performer.
