Sun Belt Regional Baseball Tracker

JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) - Here is a round-up of what the Sun Belt Conference Teams competing in Regionals did on Saturday. The stories are copies from the Associated Press:

FLORIDA ATLANTIC

 

CHAPEL HILL, NC (AP) - Corey Keller hit two home runs and Nathan Pittman added a three-run homer to help Florida Atlantic beat Canisius 14-6 on Saturday in a Chapel Hill Regional elimination game.

Keller hit a three-run homer in the second, then Pittman followed in the third for the second-seeded Owls (40-21). Levi Meyer and Mark Nelson each drove in two runs, while Austin Gomber (8-4) allowed five runs and seven hits in 7 2-3 innings for the Sun Belt champions.

Florida Atlantic lost to Towson on Friday in the double-elimination regional.

Brooklyn Foster had three hits to lead the fourth-seeded Golden Griffins (42-17), who were making their first NCAA appearance after winning the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference title.

Canisius lost 6-3 in its opener Friday to host and No. 1 overall seed North Carolina.
Devon Stewart (5-6) took the loss, allowing seven runs and four hits in two innings.

LOUISIANA-LAFAYETTE

 

BATON ROUGE, LA (AP) - Austin Robichaux gave up one run and struck out eight through eight innings, and Louisiana-Lafayette remained alive in the NCAA tournament with a 15-1 victory over Jackson State on Saturday.
Tyler Girouard had three hits and three runs batted in, including a two-run double for the Ragin' Cajuns (42-19), who trailed 1-0 before scoring four runs in the fifth.
Jace Conrad added a bases-loaded triple in the eighth for ULL, which racked up 19 hits and advanced to play Sunday against the loser of Saturday night's game between Baton Rouge regional host LSU and Sam Houston State.
Robichaux (9-2) gave up nine hits and hit four batters, but walked only one and ULL did not make an error.
Stephen Curtis had two hits for JSU (34-22), which was eliminated. Curtis' single drove in the Tigers' only run in the third. Desmond Russell (3-1) took the loss.

TROY

TALLAHASSEE, FL (AP) - Luke Weaver struck out 14 in eight scoreless innings Saturday to lead Florida State to an 11-0 victory over Troy, moving the Seminoles within a win of reaching their sixth straight super regional.
Florida State (46-15) has outscored its two opponents 21-0. Troy (41-19) and Alabama (35-27) play in an elimination game Sunday, with the winner needing to defeat Florida State twice to advance.
Weaver (7-2) scattered four hits and did not allow a walk before leaving after throwing a career-high 114 pitches. He posted the most strikeouts by a Seminoles pitcher in seven years.
DJ Stewart's solo homer capped a three-run fifth that gave the Seminoles a 3-0 lead. John Nogowski's first homer of the season gave the Seminoles a 5-0 lead in the eighth, and they added six more in the ninth.
Troy starter Tanner Hicks (8-4) was pulled after walking the leadoff hitter to start the seventh.

SOUTH ALABAMA

STARKVILLE, MS (AP) - Mississippi State scored four runs in the fifth inning to overcome an early deficit and beat South Alabama 6-2 at an NCAA regional Saturday night.

Brett Pirtle had the big hit during the Bulldogs' fifth inning, with a two-run single to right field that put Mississippi State ahead 3-2. C.T. Bradford added a two-run single in the seventh inning to give the Bulldogs a 6-2 lead.

Mississippi State (45-17) advances to the regional championship game, where it will play the winner of South Alabama/Central Arkansas on Sunday night.

Ross Mitchell (12-0) pitched 5 1-3 innings of scoreless relief for the win. Alex Detz was 3 for 4 with a run scored.

South Alabama (43-19) didn't score a run after the fourth inning. Matt Bell (6-2) took the loss, giving up five runs in 6 1-3 innings.
