Region 8 women get informed about breast and ovarian cancer

Posted: Updated:

JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) – A community forum gave Region 8 women the opportunity to ask important health questions.

St. Bernard's Medical Group doctors answered questions about breast and ovarian cancer risks and genetic testing for these diseases.

The doctors discussed breast cancer susceptibility genes 1 and 2. Angelina Jolie decided to have a preventive double mastectomy once she discovered she had a BRCA1 mutation, which increases the chance of breast and ovarian cancer. Oncologist, Dr Marc Monte said that after Jolie's decision, many women had questions.

"Women have a lot of questions regarding what's the test, how much does it cost? What's the implication for myself or my family? These are very legitimate questions," said Monte.

The forum was held at the St. Bernard's Auditorium and lasted from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.
