Newport's Caleb Cross earns three All-America honors
FAYETTEVILLE (ArkansasRazorbacks.com) – The University of Arkansas men's track and field team collected 25 All-America honors with Monday's release by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). The team's accolades were spread among 18 Razorbacks, including seniors Caleb Cross and Akheem Gauntlett each racked up three. Arkansas finished third at the 2013 NCAA Outdoor Championships which concluded Saturday at Historic Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore.
Overall, the Razorback men led the country with 17 first-team honors. Cross and Gauntlett were two of four athletes in the country to earn three All-America honors, all of which were first-team selections. Both were members of the Razorbacks' 4x100- and 4x400-meter relays, while Cross was recognized for his work in the 400-meter hurdles and Gauntlett received individual honors at 400 meters.
Arkansas closed out the 2012-13 season with a third-place finish at the NCAA Championships in Eugene. The Razorbacks totaled 46.5 points—just 6.5 out of first place—in the program's highest NCAA outdoor showing under fifth-year head coach Chris Bucknam. Arkansas is the only team this season with top-10 national finishes in all three aspects of the program (first – indoor; third – outdoor; and 10th – cross country).
For those who scored points or reach an eight-athlete final at the NCAA Championships, first-team All-America accolades are awarded. Second-team All-America honors are handed out to those whose final placing in the national meet range from ninth to 16th place. Those who participated at the final site but did not place in the meet's top 16 are listed as honorable mention for the All-America award.
