NEW YORK (AP) _ Former President Bill Clinton will undergo heart bypass surgery after complaining of mild chest pain and shortness of breath.

Clinton's office says the 58-year-old former president is being admitted to New York Presbyterian Hospital. Clinton's office says he had seen a doctor first on Thursday, and additional tests today revealed the need for the surgery.

Clinton called his step-father, Dick Kelley, at his Hot Springs home around 11 a.m. Central time. Kelly tells the Associated Press that Clinton was ``very gung-ho and optimistic'' about his coming surgery.

Clinton's mother-in-law Dorothy Rodham said Clinton called her after he was had the chest pains. She said Clinton was upbeat and sounded good.

Clinton's office says Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton and Chelsea Clinton will be with the president in New York City.
