Results announced in Jacksonville mayoral runoff election

JACKSONVILLE, TX (KLTV) -

Jacksonville voters have decided to keep their mayor for another term.

In Tuesday night's mayoral runoff election, Mayor Kenneth Melvin defeated challenger Rob Gowin by less than a hundred votes.

The final tally was 586 to 510 in favor of Melvin.

"I'm very pleased, first of all, and I want to thank everyone who came out and voted, especially the ones who voted for me," Melvin says.

Gowin congratulated Mayor Melvin and says he is not giving up on the dreams he has for Jacksonville, "We ran a very positive campaign, we have a great group of supporters behind us, and we're going to keep moving forward for a better Jacksonville."

Melvin says the important thing is the people of Jacksonville exercised their right to vote, "I'm glad that we live in a country where people can express their opinions via the ballot box."

The mayor says he is going to keep Jacksonville on the same positive track the city has been on for the last two years. He also says this is the last time he will run for mayor.

In May's election, the margin between the two was just 37 votes, with neither candidate able to win 50% of the votes.

Melvin has spent the last eight years as an elected official in Jacksonville with terms on the City Council, and as mayor.

Gowin is the owner of Sadler's restaurant, and a longtime Jacksonville resident.
