JONESBORO, Ark. (AStateRedWolves.com) – Arkansas State University's Sharika Nelvis will have an opportunity to showcase her talents against the nation's best as the Red Wolves' All-America athlete will be participating in the 2013 USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, which are set for June 20-23 in Des Moines, Iowa.
The 2013 USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, which are being hosted by Greater Des Moines and Drake University, will be held at DU's Drake Stadium. The Drake Stadium has once before played host to the USA Outdoor Track & Field Championships in 2010, three times the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in 2008, 2011, and 2012, and 104 editions of the Drake Relays.
Nelvis is slated to compete in the 100-meter hurdles with first-round competition for the event to get underway Friday, June 21, at 5:15 p.m. (CT). The 100-meter hurdles final will take place on Saturday, June 22, at 5:52 p.m. (CT).
"Sharika has had a great year and to be able to compete at the USA national championships is certainly a honor for her and we are proud of all her accomplishments," said A-State head coach Jim Patchell. "She had a great race in the preliminary round at the NCAA Championships before having a little problem with her start in the final. The USA's (Championships) gives her one more chance at putting a complete race together and I think she is ready to do that."
Nelvis will be making her USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships debut after earning U.S. Track and Field/Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) first-team All-America laurels. Nelvis, the 2013 Sun Belt Conference (SBC) Outdoor Championships' Most Outstanding Women's Track Performer, turned in both an A-State and conference outdoor record 12.84 time in last Thursday's (June 6) 100-meter hurdles semifinals at the 2013 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships held June 5-8 in Eugene, Ore. The 2013 first-team All-SBC selection would go on to post a 12.92 time in last Saturday's (June 8) 100-meter hurdles final to claim sixth place.
The USA Outdoor Track & Field Championships are returning to Track Central USA for this summer. Following the Olympic year in London, the 2013Championships serve as the selection event for the coveted spots to represent Team USA at the IAAF World Championships to take place August 10-18 in Moscow, Russia. The USA Outdoor Track & Field Championships are also the final stop of the 2013 Outdoor USATF Championship Series, following stops at the Drake Relays and Penn Relays in April, the Adidas Grand Prix in May, and the Prefontaine Classic in June.
Former All-America triple jumper James Jenkins is Arkansas State's most recent athlete to participate in the USA Track and Field Championships as he finished eighth in the 2007 event.
