Posted: Updated:

POPLAR BLUFF, MO (KAIT) – A shooting on Sunday was deemed accidental by police after being called to assist a man who had been shot.

According to Poplar Bluff police, officers were dispatched to the 300 block of South 5th Street Sunday around 10:45 p.m. in reference to someone who had been shot.

Police say Brandon Holloman of Springfield was taken a Poplar Bluff hospital for treatment of a gunshot wound to the abdomen. Holloman told police Fernando Minnis shot him accidentally while "playing" with the handgun.

Holloman went on to tell officers that he had examined the gun and pulled the trigger without it firing before handing it to Minnis.

Other witnesses interviewed at the scene confirmed Holloman's account, police say.
