Grizzlies kick off midnight basketball tournaments

(WMC-TV) – Teens from across Memphis hit the court Saturday night for the first of several Memphis Grizzlies midnight basketball tournaments.

The games started around 7 Saturday night at the Memphis Athletic Ministries Grizzlies Athletic Center on Ball Road.

Tournament play went until 11 and continues every Saturday until August. These games are part of a bigger effort to reduce crime among teens.

Grizz staff members say they're a positive alternative during noted high crime hours on Saturdays. Participant Joshua Fleming explained why he was there, "We out here to stay out of the streets. Just have fun."

Daniel Peterson with the Memphis Grizzlies said, "Getting them in. We've got police officers here scrimmaging against kids, running double elimination tournament. Goes all night long. We're feeding the kids and got Devon Steele with K97 playing the music."

These games are open to boys and girls ages sixteen through twenty.

The Memphis Grizzlies midnight basketball tournament games take place every Saturday from now till August 3rd, with the exception of the July 4th weekend.

They take place at the Grizzlies Athletic Center at 2107 Ball Road.
