NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

A 22-year-old woman is facing animal cruelty charges after police said she left her two dogs in a sweltering vehicle at Opry Mills.

The incident occurred June 15 at the Opry Mills mall in Donelson.

Police dispatch received a call at about 3 p.m. regarding a vehicle with two dogs in it in the Opry Mills parking lot, according to an affidavit. Police and animal control responded to the scene.

Two dogs were located inside the vehicle with the windows cracked. There was no food or water in the vehicle for the animals.

An animal control officer measured the inside temperature of the vehicle at 142 degrees. Police said the dogs were visibly panting and appeared to be in distress.

Animal control said the dogs were overheated and took custody of the animals.

The owner, Hayli D. Schnebelen, did not return to the vehicle until 5 p.m. She admitted the dogs were hers and she should not have left them unattended.

A court date is scheduled for July 3.
