Police: Teen drowns in Luxora

MISSISSIPPI COUNTY, AR (KAIT) – Mississippi County authorities says a teen drowned Friday evening.

Officer Jennings with the Luxora Police Department says a 16-year-old teen from Luxora drowned in Lake Newark while swimming with his family.

Jennings says they were called out around 6 p.m. after they received a call in reference to people having trouble swimming.

When they arrived, they made contact with the younger brother who reported his aunt and his older brother had trouble swimming and his brother was still in underwater.

They then contacted the Blytheville Emergency Squad to search the water. The emergency squad arrived around 6:45 p.m. and searched the lake.

The squad recovered the teen's body just before 8:30. He was pronounced dead a couple minutes later by the Mississippi County Coroner.

The teen's aunt was transported to the hospital in Osceola after having trouble breathing.

Officer Jennings would like to thank the Mississippi County Sheriff's Department, Luxora First Responders, and the Blytheville Emergency Squad for their help in the search.
