MANY, LA (KSLA) -

A 12-year-old Many boy has been charged with cruelty, after admitting to pouring boiling hot water over a stray dog at the Timbers Apartment complex last week.

The dog was rescued after someone called the Sabine Parish Humane Society, who contacted police. Joe Dewil with the Sabine Parish Sheriff's Office says the boy admitted to dousing the dog with scalding water because it kept getting into the trash.

Jack Ross with the Sabine Parish Humane Society says the 6-month-old mixed breed female pup suffered what appear to be first and second-degree burns on most of her back, neck, one ear and left hind leg, but she has been treated by a local veterinarian and is expected to survive.

She is continuing her recovery at the Sabine Parish Humane Society, where workers have dubbed her "Amazing Grace."

"She is getting bathed once a day and we put ointment application on twice a day," Ross says.
"I was kind of surprised to see the extent of it, but I was more amazed at the fact that she was still very friendly, and likes humans and hasn't been soured on the human race yet."

Hunter Tarpley works at the Humane Society, and says in spite of Grace's injuries, it's hard to tell the pup is in pain, because of her loving and playful personality. "It was so hot that the fur come off.  Just horrible, but she was still wagging her tail, running and jumping."

Tarpley says that's how "Amazing Grace" earned her name. "A dog that can survive that, pretty amazing."

It could be a while before she is well enough to be adopted. The humane society says they have already received several inquiries. Those interested in adopting Amazing Grace can call the Sabine Parish Humane Society at 318-256-2275.

The 12-year-old boy is charged with simple cruelty to animals. He faces a fine of up to $1,000 or 6 months in jail. His fate will be decided by a judge in the juvenile court system.
