State police entry team fatally shoots suspect

FRANKLIN COUNTY, MA (WSHM) -

Police fatally shot a man while they were serving a search warrant at his home in Orange early Wednesday morning.

According to officials, the State Police Special Tactical Operations went into the apartment on Mechanic Street to serve a search warrant as a result of a narcotics investigation previously conducted by the State Police Detective Unit for Hampshire and Franklin Counties.

While STOP was entering the apartment building, a man, who police said was a prime target in the investigation, approached officers with a firearm. Officials said troopers then pulled out their weapons and shot the suspect.

According to police, medical aid was given and the 23-year-old was taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Police said a second target of the investigation, a 25-year-old woman, who was also in the apartment during the shooting, suffered an eye injury and is receiving treatment.

Police have not released the identity of either suspect.

Police also confirmed a second weapon was found in the apartment, which is also being processed for evidence.

The incident remains under investigation.
