SPRINGFIELD, MA (WSHM) -

A ten year old girl who drowned in the Chicopee River in Springfield has been identified at Kahdro Abdi. Police say she was walking with her family near a shallow portion of the river and fell in.

An ambulance escorted by Springfield police rushed to Baystate Medical Center Wednesday night amid the crying out of bystanders with a 10-year-old girl on board.

At that point authorities were still hopeful she could be revived.

"The Springfield police dive team recovered her...hopefully they'll be able to revive her," said Dennis Leger, executive aide to the Springfield Fire Commissioner.

An hour before that, Springfield police and fire officials and Ludlow firefighters scoured the river for the ten year old.

Witnesses say she was with her sister and a group of friends when it happened.

"I heard kids pounding on my front door," said Julie Galica who lives nearby.

She answered the beating on her door and saw a frantic group of kids.

"She said, 'my sister went in the water.' She asked me if I could swim and I said no so I called 911," Galica said.

Bystanders gathered at the water's edge as authorities launched boats and dive teams were sent under.

Seventy minutes later, the girl was pulled out. She would later be pronounced dead at the hospital.

She becomes the third drowning victim in Western Mass in three weeks.

Two men have also drowned, one in Holyoke and one in West Springfield.

Fire officials say it's a tragic way to be reminded of the dangers of fast-moving rivers.

"O know people are hot and people need to cool off but rivers can be dangerous and what we can say here is to parents, know where your children are," Leger said.
