Man arrested after hitting man in head with ax handle several times

NEWPORT, AR (KAIT) – A man is behind bars after police say he hit another man in the head several times with an ax handle.

According to the Jackson County Sheriff's Department, deputies responded to a fight call around 10p on Jackson County Road 68.

When deputies arrived, they found 49-year-old Connie Guffey of Newport, suffering from multiple wounds to the head.

The caller told police that 39-year-old Steven Mitchell of Little Rock, was the suspect in the attack and they he left the scene with his wife and child.

Mitchell was arrested early Friday morning in Bald Knob.

He faces battery in the first degree, and three counts of endangering the welfare of a minor.

Guffy was taken to Harris Hospital in Newport and later airlifted to UAMS in Little Rock. His condition is unknown at this time.

A judge set Mitchell's bond at $500,000 and is set to appear in court again on August 7.

The Bald Knob Police Department, Bradford Police Department, and White County Sheriff's Department assisted in the arrest.
