Police: Couple caught pirating movie through hole in soda cup

(WMC-TV) - A Memphis couple is facing a long list of charges after police say they were caught trying to record the latest Disney movie inside the theater through a hole in a soda cup.

Investigators describe this discovery as a large piracy operation consisting of 126 first run titles and 17 adult films. But it all ended at a G-rated movie.

A recent showing of Monsters University at Malco Theatre in Collierville ended early for Gregory and Nakeedia Miller. Both of them were booted from scare school for reportedly bootlegging the movie.

"Indeed, it is no joke, and let this be a lesson," said Chip Washington, Shelby County Sheriff's Office.

Employees at the movie theater noticed something amiss about the couple's cup. When they looked inside, they found a small video camera and hole cut in the side of the cup so the lens could see the movie screen. At that point, investigators suspected Gregory and Nakeedia Miller might have a much larger operation going on.

"But I think we were a little surprised when we went to the residence and found as much as we did," added Washington.

Alongside the golf course, at the Southern Hills apartment complex, investigators say they found nearly 12,000 bootlegged movies in the couple's home, costing the Motion Picture Association of America nearly $120,000.

Gregory and Nakeedia Miller were taken to the Shelby County Jail. They both posted a $10,000 bond.

"So hopefully they won't be doing that again anytime in the near future," said Washington.
