PONCE, Puerto Rico (AStateRedWolves.com) – Arkansas State junior bowler Sarah Lokker teamed up with Mary Wells of Central Missouri to win the gold medal in doubles competition for Junior Team USA Monday at the Pan American Bowling Confederation (PABCON) Youth Championships being held in Ponce, Puerto Rico.
To win the gold medal Lokker and Wells bowled six individual games and then combined their scores to register the highest total of all the teams. Lokker also finished fifth in the singles event before earning the gold medal in doubles. Trios competition will be on Tuesday, while the team competition is set for Wednesday and Thursday.
"I take a deep breath and go one shot at a time," Lokker said. "It's the greatest feeling to me knowing I'm representing my country."
Lokker is the first Arkansas State bowler to travel to an international competition with Junior Team USA. The PABCON Youth Championships features countries in the American Zone competing against each other in multiple events.
Lokker, who was a sophomore this past season, was instrumental in leading A-State to the NCAA Tournament semifinals and a school-record 91 victories. She was the Mid-Winter Invitational tournament MVP while also earning all-tournament honors at the Crusader Classic and Kat Klash Invitational. She was second on the team in average pins per game at 202.8 and first on the team in total pinfall with 10,747.
At the conclusion of the regular season she was named a second-team NTCA All-American selection. This was her second All-American selection of her career after being named the NTCA Rookie of the Year and third-team NTCA All-American as a freshman.
