Trio of West Memphis Cops Indicted in Tennessee for Reckless Homicide

SEPTEMBER 10, 2004 - Posted at 7:19 a.m. CDT

MEMPHIS, TN - Three West Memphis police officers were indicted in Tennessee yesterday on reckless homicide charges.  The charges stem from a July incident when officers chased two suspects across the Mississippi River into Memphis and shot them to death.  Sergeant Vance Plumoff and officers John B. Gardener and Tony Galtelli were charged in the death of a female passenger in the car they were chasing.  44-year-old Kelly Anne Allen was shot to death July 18 after a chase of several miles.  The driver, 38-year-old Donald Rickard of Memphis also died, but no charges were filed in his death.

The chase began after officers tried to stop the car because it had an improper license plate.  The officers said they fired their service handguns into the vehicle because it was trying to run them down.  The car then crashed through a brick wall and onto the porch of a house.  Rickard and Allen were pronounced dead at the scene.
