A run for scholarships in Lawrence Co.

HOXIE, AR (KAIT) - The Hoxie Fire Department held a poker run Saturday to fund their scholarship program.

Proceeds from the poker run will help pay for the training for the department's three interns at Black River Technical College.

Through the school's fire training program, the interns receive credit for their time spent at the firehouse and the department pays for their tuition and supplies.

Cassie Sapp is a captain with the Hoxie Fire Department and told Region 8 News the interns are at the station all the time.

"We are not a full time department," said Sapp. "We are a volunteer department and that is a big asset to the city of Hoxie. It quickens our response time to calls and this is just a really great program."

The riders traveled through Strawberry, Ash Flat and Hardy then back to Hoxie for a barbecue.
