Officials to lift restrictions in 4 AZ national forests

PHOENIX (CBS5) -

Forest officials will lift the fire restrictions in four of Arizona's national forests on Wednesday.

The restrictions will end at 8 a.m. in the Coconino, Kaibab, Prescott and Tonto national forests as the risk of wildfires decreases and the monsoon brings much needed moisture.

Fire restrictions had been in place since May, when the threat of wildfires began to increase.

While campfires will be allowed on the four forests, officials urged visitors to continue to use caution and follow basic safety tips.

  • Never leave a campfire unattended.
  • Extinguish a campfire by stirring ashes with a shovel and mixing with dirt and water, leaving everything wet and cold to the touch.

In addition to lifting the restrictions, officials also will reopen the Fossil Creek area, which was closed to the public July 1.
