Two Red Wolves will compete in 107th Southern Amateur

THE WOODLANDS, Texas ( – Two Arkansas State men's golfer will compete at the 107th Southern Amateur Championship at The Club at Carlton Woods running from July 17-20.

Redshirt junior Alex Hewitt and senior Easton Key will compete in the 107th edition of the tournament, which dates back to 1902. Key qualified for the tournament after winning the Mississippi State Amateur golf tournament earlier this summer with a 4-under-par 68 at the Old Waverly Golf Club in West Point, Miss. Hewitt qualified for the event after he finished in a tie for eighth at the Arkansas State Amateur tournament with an even-par 72 at Chenal Country Club in Little Rock, Ark.

"This is the first time in a while we have had two players in the Southern Amateur Tournament, which is one of the premiere amateur tournaments in the nation," ASU head men's golf coach Steve Johnson said. "Both Easton and Alex have played well all summer and finished in the top 10 in their respective state tournaments and this is a direct result of their hard work they have put in this summer.

Key was one of the Red Wolves' top performers on the course this past season, and took home medalist honors at the Bill Ross Intercollegiate tournament in Kansas. He had a 75.2 stroke average and turned in a low round of 69 on the season. Hewitt finished the 2012-13 season with a stroke of 78.2 and turned in a low round of 70 during the year.
