Dempster Hall to remain closed through mid-August

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) -

Dempster Hall at Southeast Missouri State University will remain closed through mid-August following a fire that damaged the building on Monday.

After meeting with structural engineers and insurance companies, university officials say they learned the central atrium and parts of the building’s south wing have roof decking damage.

Officials say there is also widespread water damage on the second floor of the south wing along with smoke damage. The building will have to get new partial roofing, carpeting and paint.

The west wing has no structural damage, but some smoke damage, according to the university.

In mid-August, the building may be reopened with bare, concrete floors, and carpet replacement will likely extend into the fall semester and installed during weekends.

Offices that were in Dempster Hall have been temporarily relocated across campus.
