2 dead, 3 children saved after Hayti house fire

HAYTI, MO (KFVS) -

Two people are dead following a house fire in Hayti Saturday morning.

According to Marty Metzger with Hayti Fire Department, a house fire broke out just after 10 a.m. in the 1100 block of W. Lincoln Street.

Cortez Bean, 29, and Tamica Montgomery, 24, were found dead in the back bedroom.

According to Hayti Fire Chief Bob Turnage the two died from smoke inhalation.

Turnage also said a neighbor was able to save three children who were also in the home.

The neighbor entered the home, but she couldn't find the children due to all the smoke and began yelling.

By following the sound of her voice, the children were able to get out safely.

The front of the house was fully engulfed when crews arrived on the scene.

Crews battled the blaze for hours.

The state fire marshal has been called in to investigate the cause.
