Former Springfield mayor preparing to testify in Bulger trial

SPRINGFIELD, MA (WSHM) -

The ongoing trial in Boston of reputed mobster James "Whitey" Bulger has attracted national attention.

The prosecution is expected to rest this coming week.

When the defense takes over, a Western Mass resident will likely be taking the witness stand.

Former Springfield Mayor and current Governor's Councilor Mike Albano stopped by CBS 3 on Saturday to discuss the subpoena he received this week.

While he will take the stand for the defense, Albano said he will not be defending Bulger.

"I am there to testify against the FBI," said Albano. "I was involved in trying to release four innocent Italian Americans going back to 1983. The FBI leaned pretty heavily on me at the time, intimidated me. This will expose to even greater detail the corruption in the Boston office of the FBI. It will show the corruption of the U.S. Attorney's office."

Albano said the pressure came following his time as a member of the state's parole board.

Over 20 years later, he wants to make sure the story is told and remains fresh.

"When innocent men are incarcerated and allowed to stay there because of the efforts of the law enforcement community, when Whitey Bulger and his crew are allowed to run rampant across South Boston and throughout Massachusetts, it speaks volumes about how much oversight Congress should have and how much the story has to get out to the public so that they know," Albano stated.

Albano said just because he was subpoenaed does not mean he will definitely testify, but he say it is likely, since the witness list was cut by more than half and he is still on it.
