Horseshoe Bend votes to disband town's police department

HORSESHOE BEND, AR (KAIT) – The Horseshoe Bend Police Department will no longerexist after September.

The Horseshoe Bend City Council approved a proposalMonday to disband the town's police department, according to Mayor Bob Barnes.

Barnes says two council members opposed the measure,while six agreed with his proposal to allow the Izard County Sheriff'sDepartment to become the sole law enforcement agency in the community.

Barnes says the move will save the city an estimated$80,000 each year.

The mayor also says the sheriff's department will offerjobs to the town's three full-time police officers as well as use the formerpolice station as a substation. He also would like to assure the residents thatthere will still be around-the-clock police protection despite many people'sconcerns.

The Izard County Sheriff's Department is expected to takeover police duties full-time on September 1.
