Police warn of social security fraud

Posted: Updated:

POPLAR BLUFF, MO (KAIT) – Police in Poplar Bluff are warning residents not to give information to those posing as a social security benefits card company.

According to Capt. David Sutton with PBPD, the department has received complaints from residents who are receiving text messages claiming to be from Direct Express.

The text message has a number to call. Once called, victims are asked to give their benefit card number, birth date and social security number.

Direct Express has said they will not contact customers for this information.

Anyone who may have fallen victim to this incident is encouraged to contact Direct Express immediately. If a financial loss has been suffered, police say to file a complaint with local law enforcement.
