19 arrests in Jackson Co. as part of 'Operation Safe Playground'

JACKSON COUNTY, AR (KAIT) – Multiple law enforcement agencies teamed up and landed 19 different arrests Wednesday and Thursday as part of Operation Safe Playground.

With the help of many other agencies, the Jackson County Sheriff's Office conducted the operation as a way to keep children and citizens safe in Jackson County by making sure all sex offenders were following registration laws of the state.

The operation lasted for two days and officers were able to make the 19 arrests, 12 of them were felony arrests and the other 7 were misdemeanor.

Sheriff David Lucas told Region 8 News seven of those arrests were sex offenders and the other 12 were arrested on outstanding warrants.

According to the news release, the following were arrested on felony charges:

  • Clayton Barnett, age 56, of Swifton, was charged with felony in possession of a firearm. He was admitted to the hospital and will be arraigned at a later date.
  • James Thomas, age 66, of Swifton, was charged with felony in possession of a firearm. His bond was set at $75,000.
  • Josh Tidwell, age 29, of Newport, was charged with a parole violation.
  • Eddrick Crump, age 32, of Newport, was picked up on order for revocation of suspended imposition of sentence. Bond was set at $200,000.
  • Latesha Bailey, age 30 of Newport, was charged with failure to appear in Circuit Court. His bond was set at $5,000 cash.
  • Michael Leonard, age 38, of Newport, was charged with failure to comply with registration requirements. His bond was set at $75,000.
  • Edwin Nagel, age 48, of Tuckerman, was charged with failure to comply with registration requirements and a felon in possession of a firearm. His bond was set at $40,000.
  • William Cody Knight, age 24, of Newport, was charged with being an absconder from parole.
  • James L. Williford, age 47, of Newport, was charged with failure to comply with registration requirements. His bond was set at $100,000.
  • Robert Moore, age 52, of Bradford, was charged with a felony for possession of a firearm. His bond was set at $40,000.
  • Joey Smith, age 38, of Amagon, was charged with failure to comply with registration requirements. His bond was set at $75,000.
  • Eddie Permenter, age 50, of Newport, was charged with failure to comply with registration requirements. His bond was set at $100,000.
  • Gilbert Doyle, age 57, of Newport, was charged with a petition for revocation of probation. His bond was set at $25,000.

Six other individuals were arrested on Misdemeanor violations.

Sheriff Lucas said they teamed up with the United States Marshal's Office, the Newport Police, the Diaz Police Department, and the Swifton Police Department.

He said they partnered with Nimbus a private entity that helped law enforcement by providing software that checks computers for possible child porn.
