City of Jonesboro helps citizens secure ID

JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) – Tossing important documents in the trash can leave people at risk for identity theft. The city of Jonesboro is working to keep its citizens secure.

Residents were invited to the intersection of Monroe and Madison to have their paperwork shredded by Cintas, Monday.  The city also shredded a room full of old city documents and paperwork.

"Identity theft is a big issue today and that's one secure means of making sure that nobody get a hold of any information that might come back to cause you some problem later," said John Street, Jonesboro Councilman.

"Working in the 911 business, we see it on a daily basis.  Where somebody's ID is stolen from a trash can," said Jeff Presley, E911 director. "It's thrown away and you know they get that information and can use their credit card, social security numbers.  It's something to think about.

Approximately six tons of paperwork was shredded.
