JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) – Tossing important documents in thetrash can leave people at risk for identity theft. The city of Jonesboro isworking to keep its citizens secure.
Residents were invited to the intersection of Monroe andMadison to have their paperwork shredded by Cintas, Monday. The city also shredded a room full of old citydocuments and paperwork.
"Identity theft is a big issue today and that'sone secure means of making sure that nobody get a hold of any information thatmight come back to cause you some problem later," said John Street, JonesboroCouncilman.
"Workingin the 911 business, we see it on a daily basis. Where somebody's ID is stolen from a trashcan," said Jeff Presley, E911 director. "It's thrown away and you know theyget that information and can use their credit card, social security numbers. It's something to think about.
Approximately six tons of paperwork wasshredded.
