Former Arkansas Tech football coach Don Dempsey dies

RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. (AP) - Former Arkansas Tech All-American football player and longtime coach Don Dempsey has died at age 83.

ATU spokesman Sam Strasner says Dempsey died Monday in Russellville of apparent natural causes.

Dempsey was an All-American in 1954 when he played center and linebacker.

Dempsey coached at Mountain Home High School from 1955-58 - then joined the Arkansas Tech staff in 1959 as an assistant football and head baseball coach and physical education instructor. He became head football coach in 1967 and continued to coach baseball until 1970.

He stepped down as football coach in 1975.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at First United Methodist Church of Russellville.
