Posted:

SEARCY (HardingSports.com) – Harding University junior placekicker John Gay was named to the Fred Mitchell Award Watch List on Tuesday.

Gay, a native of Jonesboro, Ark., is one of 34 collegiate placekickers on the Watch List, including only 12 from NCAA Division II.

The Fred Mitchell Award Watch List is designed to recognize collegiate placekickers based on outstanding performance in the community and based on expectations going into the 2013 football season.

Gay made 14-of-18 field goals and all 43 extra-point attempts in 2012, earning 1st Team All-Great American Conference and Don Hansen 3rd Team All-Super Region 3 honors. He set school records for field goal percentage (78 percent) and consecutive extra-points made (43).

Gay was also active in the community, volunteering for the Walk for the Cure cancer walk, the Say Thanks Day and Highlighter Run, and at Bisons for Christ.

The annual Fred Mitchell Award is provided to the nation's top collegiate place-kicker among more than 750 FCS, Division II, III, NAIA and NJCAA football teams. The Award is named for Fred Mitchell, the record-setting place-kicker, Wittenberg University Athletic Hall of Famer, author, philanthropist and Chicago Tribune sports columnist. The recipient of the Fred Mitchell Award will be chosen based on excellence on the football field and in the community.
