From Arkansas State University
Arkansas State athletics and the 2013 Paint the Town Red campaign were the topics of discussion at this month's Jonesboro Regional Chamber of Commerce Power Breakfast event, which featured ASU Director of Athletics Terry Mohajir and ASU head football coach Bryan Harsin as guest speakers Wednesday morning.
The Chamber annually uses one of its monthly gatherings to salute A-State Athletics, and the coaches and staff members used the opportunity to preview the upcoming sports year and express their gratitude to the Chamber and its members for their support of Red Wolves athletics.
Mohajir took the opportunity to speak on A-State's recent accomplishments both on and off the playing field. The football program captured its first bowl win since the 1970 season with a victory over Kent State in the GoDaddy.Com Bowl, while a $25 million football facility was also announced within the past year. A $5 million contribution from Liberty Bank also led to the naming rights of the football stadium, now known as Liberty Bank Stadium.
Mohajir also spoke about ASU's accomplishments within the classroom, which saw five teams win Sun Belt Conference Team Academic Awards and placed 182 athletes on the Athletic Director's Honor Roll for both the fall and spring semesters.
Coach Harsin took the opportunity to discuss the upcoming football season and joined Mohajir in thanking fans for continued support of the A-State athletics programs. The Red Wolves football team will begin its season Aug. 31 against Arkansas-Pine Bluff at Liberty Bank Stadium.
Jonesboro Regional Chamber of Commerce Executive Vice President and COO Cari White spoke about the 17th Annual Paint the Town Red event. The competition will be held Aug. 23-31 to celebrate the first A-State home football game. As part of the event, local businesses are asked to take decorate the interior and/or exterior of their businesses to show pride and support for ASU.
Categories for the decorating contest will include an Exterior, Interior and First Timers award, and a Spirit Award will be given to the business that best demonstrates its Red Wolves spirit through cheers, live outdoor scenes and other creative displays during judging. A traveling trophy will be awarded for the best window display by downtown merchants.
Judging will take place Aug. 28, while Thursday, Aug. 29 has been designated as wear red day, while the "Big Great A-State Tailgate" will take place in Tailgate City just outside Liberty Bank Stadium from 5:30-7 p.m. that same night.
