Great Lakes Coast Guard saves 2, assists 95 over the weekend

Coast Guard 9th District crews across the Great Lakes had a busy weekend, responding to 84 cases of mariners in distress, saving two people and assisting 95 others. This Sunday was the service's 223rd birthday.

The names of the individuals rescued and assisted over the long weekend will not be released.

A rescue boat crew from Coast Guard Station Marblehead rescued a kayaker who capsized in Lake Erie Friday night. The man was kayaking with his brother near North Bass Island when his brother lost sight of him and called 911. The Ottawa County Sheriff's Office, Put-in-Bay harbor master and Life Flight rescue helicopter crew responded to assist. The air crew spotted the capsized kayaker and notified the SPC-LE crew of his position.

A rescue boat crew from Coast Guard Station St. Clair Shores, MI rescued a man suffering from signs of a head/neck injury after diving into the water from a boat in Lake St. Clair Saturday night. The rescue crew placed the injured a man in a neck brace on a backboard. A rescue boat crew from Clay Township, MI arrived on scene and transported him to shore, where emergency medical services further transported him to a nearby hospital.

A rescue boat crew from Station Marblehead assisted two people whose boat was taking on water in Lake Erie Friday night.

Rescue boat crews from Coast Guard Station Saginaw River in Essexville, MI assisted five people on a 21-foot boat that was taking on water in Saginaw Bay Friday night.

A rescue boat crew from Coast Guard Station St. Ignace, MI assisted five people aboard a 23-foot boat that had run aground and was taking on water in the Straits of Mackinac near Mackinac Island Saturday morning. A good Samaritan also responded to the boat taking on water after hearing the urgent marine information being broadcast by a watchstander at the station. Due to the shallow water, a member of the Coast Guard rescue crew embarked on the good Samaritan's boat and facilitated the transfer onto the RB-S.

A rescue boat crew from Coast Guard Station Buffalo, NY assisted one person aboard a 27-foot boat that was taking on water in Buffalo's outer harbor Saturday afternoon. A member of the rescue boat crew was able to secure the water entering the man's boat and a commercial salvor towed the boat to safety.

A rescue boat crew from Coast Guard Station Sackets Harbor, NY assisted two people aboard a disabled 23-foot boat in Lake Ontario Saturday afternoon.

A rescue boat crew from Station Marblehead assisted two people aboard a 47-foot sailboat that was taking on water in Lake Erie Sunday morning.

Rescue boat crews from Coast Guard Station Toledo assisted three adults and one child aboard a 23-foot boat that was taking on water in Lake Erie Sunday night. Members of the SPC-SW went aboard the boat and were able to secure the flooding, while the four were transferred to the RB-M. The boat was then towed to safety.

A rescue boat crew from Coast Guard Station St. Joseph, MI and a rescue air crew from Coast Guard Air Facility Muskegon, MI assisted in the search for a missing boater in Lake Michigan Sunday night. The woman was on a 14-foot boat transiting in Lake Michigan when she fell into the water. Rescue crews from Berrien County, Sheriff's Department Marine Division and Chikaming Township, MI Fire Department, found the woman and transported her to shore.

    JCSO Capt. Ricky Morales said deputies responded to a home in Campbell Station shortly after the comment was made. There they found a woman's body. Deputies are ruling it a homicide.
