ASU Athletics honored nationally for fiscal efficiency

JONESBORO, Ark. ( – Arkansas State University Athletics has placed seventh nationally in the 2013 Excellence in Management Cup, which annually reviews the nation's athletics departments in regards to maximizing fiscal resources while providing results in the form of championship victories.

The Excellence in Management Cup is a study presented by Texas A&M University's Laboratory for the Study of Intercollegiate Athletics (LSIA).

Arkansas State totaled a 1.09 rating to claim seventh place among the Excellence in Management's Top 25 for the 2012-13 athletics season.  Colorado earned top recognition while Oregon placed second and San Diego State was third.  West Virginia and USC rounded out the top five by finishing fourth and fifth place, respectively.

"As we continue our pursuit of winning championships, it's important we continue to be fiscally responsible," said A-State Director of Athletics Terry Mohajir.  "Fiscal responsibility is a key component to the day to day operations of college athletics.  This recognition is a great testament to our coaches and student-athletes as we're in great pursuit of driving new revenues."

The purpose of the Excellence in Management Cup is to determine which university athletics departments are maximizing fiscal resources leading to championship victories.  In essence, the cup awards those athletics departments who win the most conference and national championships while at the same time have the lowest expenses.

The scores are calculated in a formula that accounts for total athletics department spending, number of sports played and the number of conference and nationalchampionships won by each Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) university.  For the complete list of rankings for the EM Cup, visit the Laboratory for the Study of Intercollegiate Athletics' website -

Established in 2003, The Laboratory for the Study of Intercollegiate Athletics is an interdisciplinary research and training laboratory supported by the Division of Sport Management program in the Department of Health and Kinesiology, College of Education and Human Development at Texas A&M University.  The Laboratory examines major concepts and issues related to the management and conduct of all levels of intercollegiate athletics.
