Record Number of Men Turn Out to Get Tested

September 15, 2004--Posted 4:00 pm CDT

Jonesboro, AR--St Bernards Medical Center officials usually expect around six to seven hundred men to show up for the annual prostate screening held at the St Bernards Auditorium.  Imagine there surprise when they almost reached that total on the first of two days.  Nearly five hundred men showed up to get tested….and tomorrow officials are expecting even more.

“Ten years ago we had trouble getting men in the doors,” Ray Winters said. “there wasn’t nearly this type of turnout.”  Lines were long but moved along well throughout the morning.  Ten minutes before doors were scheduled to open at seven in the morning a line of more than one hundred stood waiting.  Officials say they were astonished by the number of people who showed up early.  And people continued to arrive all the way up to noon when the doors closed for the day.

If you missed the first day of the screening officials say do not panic.  The free screening is only half way over with another day going on Thursday, September 15.  Doors once again open at seven in the morning and close at noon.  No one arriving by noon will be turned away.
